Who we are

Small Town Living… Big Time Recreation!

Welcome to the City of Au Gres—where small-town charm meets the beauty of Michigan’s waterways. Incorporated in 1906, our community of just under 1,000 residents grows to thousands in the summer as visitors come to enjoy everything our region has to offer.

The City of Au Gres is here to provide residents, taxpayers, and visitors with clear access to essential services, including zoning ordinances, permits, recreation plans, and public meeting information. Online, you can easily pay water bills or taxes, review important documents, and stay connected through quick links to the most requested resources.

Whether you’re a resident, business owner, or simply exploring the area, our goal is to make information accessible, simple, and reliable—so you can focus on living, working, and enjoying all that Au Gres has to offer.

We currently offer 118 spacious campsites and two cozy cabins, with 28 new full-hookup sites and additional cabins coming soon. From anglers looking to be close to the bay, to couples and families seeking a laid-back stay, our visitors return year after year for the quiet atmosphere, friendly staff, and unbeatable location—just minutes from town, shopping, and dining.

Mission

Our mission is to create an environment that promotes strong economic growth while safe guarding the public trust and building a sense of place that focuses on our future and honors our heritage.

Vision

For the delivery of quality service, and to provide a safe community with a high quality of life, and to confront challenges, protect our financial health, and promote economic viability of our area.

Au Gres History

Au Gres' meaning and history:

Au Gres means “of sandstone” because of the type of material on the river bottom. The City of Au Gres lies atop a glacial lake feature which consists of clay or shallow layers of sand over clay. In the early years, Au Gres was considered a logging community; however, today the largest industry appears to be tourism. Both logging and tourism are likely direct results of the Au Gres River, which runs through the City, and the city’s proximity to Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron. The theme of this area used to be “Timber to Tourist,” but now Au Gres is known as “The Perch Capital.”
