Public Housing vs. Section 8

Understanding the difference between public housing and the Housing Choice Voucher Program can help you determine which program best fits your needs.

Public Housing
Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8)
  • Rental assistance stays with the housing unit.
  • Eligible residents live in housing owned and managed by the Housing Commission.
  • When a resident moves, the subsidy remains with the apartment for the next qualified household.
  • The voucher belongs to the family rather than a housing unit.
  • Families locate private landlords who accept Housing Choice Vouchers.
  • Assistance moves with the family if they relocate to another participating property.
Luna Pier Housing Commission provides Public Housing only and does not administer Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers.
